Celebrating the International Day of Women in Mathematics—May 10, 2025

7 months ago Jun 01, 2025
The Egyptian Women in Mathematics Association (EWMA) proudly celebrated the International Day of Women in Mathematics on May 10, 2025. A landmark event was hosted at the Faculty of Science, Cairo University, as part of the faculty’s Centennial Celebration (1925–2025). This year’s celebration marked a unique milestone. It was not just a scientific gathering—it was a story of determination and collective effort. Six months earlier, EWMA submitted a proposal to the International Mathematical Union (IMU) to create a Network for Arab Women in Mathematics. The initiative received partial support, and with passion and perseverance, the EWMA team brought this vision to life. The May 10 event was a powerful beginning for a lasting regional movement. The celebration brought together a distinguished group of national and international leaders who share a common mission to uplift women in STEM, including Dr. Nuria Sanz, UNESCO Regional Director for Egypt and Sudan, and Liaison Officer to the League of Arab States Prof. Nadia Zakhary, former Minister of Scientific Research and President of the National Committee for Women in Science, ASRT Dr. Magda Al Hinai, President of the Committee for Mathematics in Oman Dr. Lama Tarsissi, President of the United Arab Women in Mathematics Association Dr. Rami Magdy, Assistant Secretary-General of the Egyptian National Committee for Education, Science and Culture for ICESCO Affairs, who attended and delivered remarks on behalf of Dr. Ayman Farid, Assistant Minister for Strategic Planning, Head of the Cultural Affairs and Missions Sector, and Supervisor of the Egyptian National Committee for Education, Science and Culture Their participation sent a strong message of solidarity, regional cooperation, and commitment to nurturing the next generation of women mathematicians across the Arab world. Organized in collaboration with the Egyptian Mathematical Society, the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, and Cairo University, the event featured keynote talks, panel discussions, student presentations, and an institutional call to action under the theme: “Building Opportunities: Empowering Arab Women in Mathematics through Networking and Institutional Support.” The International Day of Women in Mathematics, celebrated globally in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the Fields Medal, reminds us of the power of representation, the importance of equity, and the potential of every young girl with a passion for math. EWMA continues its commitment to fostering connections, creating opportunities, and bolstering the ambitions of women in mathematics throughout Egypt and the Arab region.
